A Scout Leader from Mynydd Isa, Flintshire has been selected to join a group of ten Scouts from across the UK to work alongside the Chambo Scout Group in Malawi and help to repair a primary school which was damaged during a tropical cyclone.
Lily is the only Scout travelling to Malawi from Wales and will be leading the building team. Her team will carry out structural work on the building, including repairs to the damaged roof and walls whilst the education team work on the interior of the school to provide learning aids, desks and solar panels to allow learning to take place during the evenings.
The Malawian Community Project has been arranged through the Scout of the World Award which allows Scout Network members to develop skills and knowledge that will empower them to undertake a project that will make a sustainable impact.
Lily said, “I applied to take part in the project as I thought that it would be a great way to give back to a community that needs support in a way that matters to them. The Scout of the World Award is structured in a people-centred way. We have asked the local community what they need and we have built our plan around that.”
Preparations for the project, which takes place from 18th December 2026 to 4th January 2027, are well underway. The team have been taking part in planning weekends and are communicating regularly.
Lily continued, “We have a good plan that I am looking forward to implementing and I feel that we can overcome all of the many challenges we may face when we are out in Malawi.”
To make the project possible, all members of the UK team taking part must raise the funds needed for the cost of flights, visas and vaccinations.
Lily set herself the challenge of walking the 84 mile length of Hadrian’s Wall path over the course of three days to raise the funds needed. She completed this challenge but is currently still short of her target, so all donations are gratefully accepted towards Lily’s work on the Malawian Community Project.
