This summer, Will Hughes, a Scout Leader from 2nd Rhyl Scout Group, embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Norway as part of Roverway 2024. Roverway, a European Scouting event for Scouts and Guides aged 16-22, offers youth-led adventure, cultural exchange, and the chance to step up as leaders on a global stage. Held every 3 to 6 years, this year’s event did not disappoint.

Will’s Roverway journey kicked off long before setting foot in Norway. Preparations included gatherings with the UK contingent, such as the first event at Hesley Wood in Sheffield and later at the UK Scouts HQ at Gilwell Park in London. These prep events were essential for learning about his role and the culture he’d be immersing himself in during the event. Will found these meetings invaluable, especially gaining insights into Norwegian customs and how to stay safe during large international Scouting events.

On July 21st, the adventure truly began. Will and other members of the International Service Team (IST) flew from Newcastle to Stavanger, but not before they had a celebratory meal together the night before, breaking the ice and forming early bonds that would last throughout the event.

At Roverway, Will was part of the Service Team, working alongside Scouts and Guides from countries like France, Germany, Australia, and Slovenia. This diversity made the experience even more special, as friendships were built across borders while working together on essential tasks such as toilet duty, bin collection, and the welfare and response team. Despite some of the less glamorous jobs, Will’s got stuck in, even earning a badge for his toilet duties!

Roverway wasn’t just about hard work; the IST members also had plenty of time to experience Norway’s stunning landscapes and participate in the event’s key moments. Will attended all three main ceremonies: the IST Opening Ceremony, the Main Opening Ceremony, and the Closing Ceremony. Evenings were spent unwinding with fellow IST members in the lively foodhouse tents, where music and conversation filled the air late into the night. Every evening was different, providing plenty of opportunities to relax and recharge after the day’s activities.

One of the highlights of Will’s time in Norway was a breath taking hike to Preikestolen, a famous Norwegian cliff that towers over a fjord. For Will, this was the activity he had been most looking forward to—and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The hike, filled with stunning views, left a lasting impression. The scenery at the summit was nothing short of breath taking and provided a well-deserved reward after a day of trekking through the Norwegian wilderness.

On one of his last days in Norway, Will explored the city of Stavanger, visiting famous landmarks such as Sverd i Fjell, the iconic Viking sword monument. The day ended with a meal shared with other UK IST members, reflecting on their shared experiences and new friendships.

Will’s experience at Roverway 2024 has been truly unforgettable. Not only did he gain valuable skills and make lifelong friends, but he also took part in something bigger than himself—a global movement of Scouts coming together to make the world a better place. His journey isn’t over yet. Many of the UK IST members have already planned a reunion at Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland for New Year’s, and Will is excited for more international Scouting adventures in the future.

As Will reflects on his experience, he is filled with gratitude for everyone who supported him along the way.
