A volunteer with Wrexham Scouts is heading to Ghana after being selected as one of just 20 young people across the UK – and only two in Wales – to take part in a prestigious humanitarian programme.

Georgia Ellams, 19 from Wrexham, will be joining Scouts from across the UK travelling to the country in Africa this Christmas. They will work in small groups to deliver a project working closely with the rural communities, which will have a significant impact on local lives. They will undertake more than 80 hours of project management work, which will hopefully lead to Georgia earning the Scouts of the World Award.

Having been involved in Scouts since the age of five, Georgia previously represented the UK at the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea at sixteen – and now adds another international experience to her growing list of achievements.

Georgia, who is an apprentice at plane-maker Airbus, said, “I get so much from Scouts, I honestly don’t think I’d be pursuing my career or have had the confidence to secure a place with Airbus, without my journey through Scouting.

“I’m incredibly excited for this opportunity. Being part of Scouts allows me to test myself, give back and develop skills that will benefit me. I feel very privileged to be able to take part.”

As 14-24 Team Leader with Wrexham Scouts Georgia plays a crucial volunteer role in supporting the Explorer Scout and Scout Network sections.

Lead Volunteer for Wrexham Scouts, Jo Briggs said, “Georgia is exceptional, and her selection for the Ghana Scouts of the World Award expedition reflects her dedication and passion. She has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to making a difference in scouting in Wrexham.

“As the 14-24 Team Lead, she has stepped up to enhance the experiences of young people, ensuring they have opportunities to grow and continue their journey after leaving Scouts, encouraging progression into Explorers and then to Network.

“Her drive and compassion make her a true asset to our District, and I am confident she will make a meaningful impact during her time in Ghana. I am incredibly proud of her and look forward to seeing the positive change she will help bring about.”
